Fifteen is Fine: YellowJackets Sweep Patriots in Home Finale

LONGVIEW -- LeTourneau University's volleyball team swept Arlington Baptist, 25-15, 25-17, 25-21, Tuesday in the final home match of the season.

The YellowJackets improved to 15-12, while the Patriots fell to 15-6 in the nonconference match. LETU will take its show on the road for the remainder of the season, beginning 7 p.m. Friday at Louisiana College. The Jackets will conclude the regular season at the Millsaps College Tournament Saturday in Jackson, Miss.

LeTourneau converted 61 percent of its sideout opportunities, going 33 of 54 in the match. ABU was good on 32 of 74 for 43 percent. The YellowJackets hit .185, putting away 43 balls in 130 attempts. The Patriots hit .106 with 30 kills in 123 swings.

LETU took a 20-8 lead in the first set on an ace by Taylor Smith before ABU went on a 5-0 run to pull within seven. Both teams swapped points over the next four serves before Natalie Connelly put away a kill and combined with Smith on a block to move within set point. A Patriots error on the next serve gave the Jackets a 1-0 lead in the match.

The Jackets never trailed in the opening set.

In the second set, LeTourneau opened a 9-4 lead on an ace by Natalie Davenport. Arlington Baptist cut it to 12-9 before Smith pounded back-to-back kills. The YellowJackets used a 6-0 run on a kill and ace by Mikayla Thomas, two kills by Kianna Crow, a block by Connelly and a Patriots error to take a 21-11 lead. ABU cut it to 22-16 before a pair of Patriots errors left LETU within a point of going up two sets to none. ABU won the next point on a YellowJackets error, but Smith banged down one of Davenport's 34 assists to seal the set.

LeTourneau fell behind 12-10 in the third set, but went on a 5-0 run to take control, 15-12. Crow had a kill and a combination block with Thomas during the spurt. Arlington Baptist won three of the next four points to draw within one on two occasions, but LETU secured the next four points on kills by Crow and Lexie Welton and two aces by Davenport to push the lead to 20-15. Smith's kill extended it to 23-17 before the Patriots trimmed the gap to 23-21 with a four-point run. But Thomas banged down the last two points to finish it off.

Thomas finished with 11 kills, two aces and three blocks, while hitting .348 in her final match at Solheim Arena. Smith had 11 kills, 14 digs and three blocks, while hitting .296. Crow had 10 kills and 15 digs. Cam Taylor had 21 digs, and Audrey Galindo nine in their final appearances at LETU.

LeTourneau had six aces, including three by Davenport, while Arlington Baptist recorded one.

LETU is a half-match ahead of East Texas Baptist in the fight for second place in the American Southwest Conference East Division. Friday is the final league regular season match this year. The ASC Tournament begins Nov. 7 at the University of Texas at Dallas.
