LONGVIEW – LeTourneau University's women's basketball team's late comeback bid fell short to Benedictine Saturday in the LETU Holiday Classic. The YellowJackets fell, 63-55.
The Jackets (3-5) trailed 51-33 after three quarters, but made a late charge to trim what was a 20-point deficit late in the third period down to four inside the final minute. But Benedictine (7-1) held on.
Keauna Whitfield scored 17 points, and had six rebounds and two steals for the YellowJackets. She was 7 of 24 from the field, including 3 of 10 from the three-point line.
Malacia Guy had seven points and four steals, and
Flora Akingbade had five points, 14 boards, three blocks and three steals.
Vanessa Cruz scored eight points, had six assists, four rebounds and two steals.
Allison Michalski shot 10 of 20 to finish with 26 points, six rebounds and two steals for the Eagles. Alex Fanning added 14 points, 17 boards, three blocks and a steal, while going 6 of 11 from the floor.
LETU outscored Benedictine, 22-12, in the fourth quarter to get itself back in the game.
Kyndall Hardeman's layup at the 4:17 mark helped the YellowJackets cut the gap to nine. Akingbade knocked down a jumper with 2:03 to go to make it a seven-point game.
Scruffy Hopkins sank two free throws 30 seconds later as LeTourneau pulled within 55-50. After Michalski scored on the Eagles' next trip down the floor, Whitfield buried a 3-pointer with 58 seconds to go on a find from
Vanessa Cruz to pull the YellowJackets within four. But Michalski scored on a layup, and Claire Gibler sank two free throws to ice it for Benedictine.
The YellowJackets shot 20 of 85 from the floor, including a 6 of 26 performance from beyond the 3-point arc. The Eagles were 25 of 58, and 3 of 10 from long distance. LeTourneau was 9 of 28 from the field in the fourth quarter, while holding Benedictine to 3 of 8 shooting.
LeTourneau forced 24 Benedictine turnovers, while coming away with 16 steals. It was fifth time this season the YellowJackets have had 15 or more steals in a game.
LETU will host Blackburn at 3 p.m. Sunday to wrap up the LETU Holiday Classic.
