LeTourneau Falls In Series Opener 6-3 To Hardin-Simmons

ABILENE, Texas – Playing their first American Southwest Conference series of the 2019 season away from home, the LeTourneau University baseball team fell to Hardin-Simmons University by a final score of 6-3 at Hunter Field in Abilene, Texas on Saturday February 23rd.

The loss drops the YellowJackets to 3-5 on the season and puts them at 0-1 to ASC play while the Cowboys improve to 2-5 overall and 1-0 in ASC action. This weekend's series was originally scheduled as a home series for LeTourneau, who will serve as the home team in all three contests despite playing on the campus of HSU.

It would be a pitching dual for the opening two innings of play as neither team would see offensive production to start the game. Not allowing a hit until the third inning, YellowJacket starting pitcher Kolbey Sharpe would see the Cowboys string together two hits to bring across two runs in the top of the third to go up 2-0.

LeTourneau would end up waiting until the bottom of the fourth to respond, using a leadoff walk by Lee Hosie and a Bryce Brueggemeyer double to left center to cut the lead to 2-1. Konner Gayle would get things rolling for the YellowJackets in the sixth with a leadoff single while Cody Lee would follow up by reaching base on a Cowboy error. A Brandon Ramirez RBI single would tie the game up before a sacrifice fly from Brueggemeyer would put the YellowJackets on top 3-2 heading into the seventh.

The back-and-forth would continue as the Cowboys capitalized on three hits to score three runs in the bottom of the eighth to regain the lead at 6-3. LeTourneau would only muster one hit in the final two innings of play, failing to make up for the eighth inning cowboy rally as the loss snaps a run of three straight wins for the YellowJackets.

Gayle would take his first loss of the season on the mound for the YellowJackets giving up three runs on just one hit as LeTourneau would use six pitchers in the game. The Cowboys would out-shine the YellowJackets offensively, recording 12 hits and drawing four walks, but would struggle to capitalize, stranding 10 total baserunners. LETU would see five hits spread across five different YellowJackets as HSU starting pitcher Jaxon Terrell would toss a complete-game.

With the series victory still available, LeTourneau will look to redeem themselves in a doubleheader on Sunday, February 24th beginning at 1 p.m.
