YellowJackets Sting Owls in Home Opener

LONGVIEW -- LeTourneau University women's soccer team beat Mississippi University for the Women, 2-0, Friday afternoon at LETU Soccer Field.

The YellowJackets (2-2) outshot the Owls (5-2) by a 24-3 margin, which included an 11-0 differential in the first hAftalf.

"It was really the tale of two halves," Jackets coach John Antonisse said. "The first half, we looked lethargic and unengaged at times. I think they were working hard, but it wasn't really what we wanted. We came out in the second half, we were full of energy, we played for each other, there was good communication, and the result was getting a couple of goals ..."

Reagan Sandford scored an unassisted goal in the 48th minute to put the YellowJackets on the board. A little over a minute later, LeTourneau struck again when Brittany Shipp converted a touch pass from Jennifer Martin to pad the lead at two.

"We got the first goal, and that just kind of gained momentum and built some confidence in them," LETU assistant coach Carly Rowan said. "We had the momentum going forward for the rest of the game."

LeTourneau had 12 shots on goal, forcing Owls goalkeeper Sarah Gilliland to make 10 saves. Mississippi University for the Women attempted three shots -- all of them in the second half. YellowJackets keeper Kiersten Reeser made one save in the shutout.

Martin ripped off eight shots, including six on goal in 66 minutes. Kara Gipson had three shots, and Skylar Thomassie four for the YellowJackets.

LeTourneau will host Millsaps at 2 p.m. Saturday on Senior Day. Eight seniors will be honored prior to the game.
