LONGVIEW -- LeTourneau's volleyball team swept Centenary, 25-19, 25-20, 25-20, Tuesday in the home opener at Solheim Arena.
"It felt really great to get the win at home in three sets," said
Kianna Crow after putting down nine kills. "We had a lot of fans out. We could feel their energy behind us."
The YellowJackets (6-5) won their second straight match, while snapping the Ladies' two-match win streak. Centenary fell to 3-8.
LETU took a 19-15 lead in the opening set when
Taylor Smith banged down a kill. Liz Lowe's kill pulled the Ladies within 21-18 before Crow and
Lexie Welton answered with back-to-back blasts to push the Jackets' lead out to 23-18.
Kiari Johnson put down a setup from
Cam Taylor on the next serve, and a Centenary error on the final serve ended the set.
The YellowJackets used a 3-0 run midway through the second set to break a 15-15 tie. Crow and Johnson combined on a block, and Welton pounded a winner during that spurt that gave LeTourneau an 18-15 lead. Ami Powers' service ace pulled the Ladies within one, but LETU went on another three-point run on Taylor's ace and two Centenary errors to push the lead to 22-18. Welton and
Mikayla Thomas each had kills to push the score to set point before the Ladies forced a sideout. Smith banged down a ball on the next serve, however, to give the YellowJackets a 2-0 lead in the match.
"It was really great to see the setters spread it around and every hitter contribute," said Smith on a night she had 11 kills and 14 digs. "It was good for every hitter to get that experience on the front line."
LeTourneau went up 10-7 in the third set on a block by
Natalie Davenport and Thomas. After the Ladies cut it to 14-13, LETU used a 4-0 run, highlighted by kills from Welton and Johnson to open up an 18-13 advantage. The YellowJackets extended the lead to seven, but the Ladies responded with a 5-0 run to cut it to 21-19. LeTourneau sealed the deal by scoring four of the last five points.
Thomas finished with seven kills, four blocks and two aces, while hitting .312. Welton had six kills. Davenport had 34 assists and nine digs.
Audrey Galindo had 12 digs and two aces. Taylor finished with 21 digs and an ace.
"It really boosts our energy and gets us excited, and makes us want to work even harder," Crow said. "We are working on not getting complacent and just settling down after a few wins. There's still a lot more work to do."
