YellowJackets' Comeback to No. 25 Comets Falls Short

LONGVIEW – LeTourneau University women's basketball team fell to No. 25 Texas at Dallas, 71-60, Saturday at home.

The YellowJackets (6-7, 2-2 American Southwest Conference) will host two more league games this week, returning to Solheim Arena 5:30 p.m. Thursday and 1 p.m. Saturday.

Keauna Whitfield had 22 points, seven rebounds and three assists, and Micayla Mikulski had 13 points and three steals for the Jackets, who were outrebounded 44-34. It was the first time in five games the YellowJackets were outrebounded.

LETU trailed by four after the end of the first period, but UT Dallas (10-4, 4-1) increased the gap to 13 at the break.

The Jackets shot 8 of 25 in the first half. The Comets were 14 of 32.

UT Dallas bumped its lead to 17 in the third quarter, but Malacia Guy hit a three-pointer on a kickout by Flora Akingbade at the 3:05 mark to cut the deficit to 11. The Comets ended the quarter on a 7-0 run to take a 54-36 into the fourth.

LeTourneau shot 47 percent in the final period, drawing within 12 on Mikulski's transition layup with 3:26 to go. Following a pair of Victoria Pena free throws, Whitfield buried a triple, and then Jordan McClenton sank a pair at the stripe with 2:50 remaining to pull the YellowJackets within nine. Mikulski came up with a steal on the next possession, but LETU couldn't convert the rest of the way.

McClenton had eight points, four rebounds, three blocks and two assists.

The YellowJackets forced 18 turnovers, while committing 13.
