PINEVILLE, La. -- LeTourneau is the second hottest team in the league.
Thursday, the YellowJackets men's basketball team will meet the hottest team in the American Southwest Conference after both handled their business this week. LETU thumped host Louisiana College, 89-66, Saturday to run its winning streak to four straight.
It sets up a showdown with ASC East leader East Texas Baptist 7:30 p.m. Thursday. LeTourneau (13-4, 6-2 ASC) sits in third place, a half game outside of second. ETBU (15-2, 8-0) is riding an eight-game win streak. The two teams will play two days later in Marshall, Texas, to complete the home-and-home week series.
"We had a nice week of getting better, and now we need a great week of practice heading into the ETBU game because they are playing at a high level," Jackets coach
Dan Miller said.
Nate West scored 26 points, had 12 assists, five rebounds and four steals, while going 10 of 20 from the field and 6 of 11 from the three-point line.
Andrew Eberhardt scored 18 points on 6 of 10 triple tries, and pulled down seven rebounds.
Korrin Taylor had 16 points, six boards and two steals. He was 7 of 10 from the floor.
West and Eberhardt's six threes matches their team-leading previous best from long distance.
LETU, which outscored Louisiana College, 28-16, in points off turnovers, trailed by one a couple minutes into the second half when Taylor scored following a steal by West to trigger a 13-0 run. West hit two 3-pointers, and Eberhardt knocked down another during the spurt.
Elijah Gerber scored with 11:17 to play to extend the lead to 17.
The Wildcats (10-7, 4-4) cut it to 12 on two other occasions – the latter on Austin Denzel's jump shot at the 9:45 mark. But Eberhardt hit a couple 3s, the second with 5:52 remaining on the clock to grow the lead to 22. Louisiana College never trimmed the deficit under 20 the rest of the way.
"We were very pleased with our second half defense today," Miller said. "Our guys really guarded in the second half, and it's exciting to see how good we can be when that happens."
LeTourneau shot 58 percent in the second half, while holding Louisiana College to 30 percent, including 1 of 12 from long range. The Wildcats were 6 of 22 from 3-point range for the game. Conversely, the YellowJackets made a season-high 16 triples on 34 attempts for 47 percent.
"We made the extra pass, especially in the second half when Andrew and Nate got going," Miller said as his team assisted on 22 of 33 field goals. "We still need to stop turning the ball over so much to be a great team."
The 22 assists fell two shy of the season high. LETU had 16 turnovers.
John Argue had nine points and eight rebounds, and
Justin Moore eight points, five boards, three assists and a steal.
Warren Richardson scored seven points.
The Jackets outrebounded the Wildcats, 41-27. Â It was the second consecutive game LeTourneau outrebounded its opponent by double digits.
