PINEVILLE, La. -- Two straight weeks of perfection.
That's the scenario LeTourneau University women's basketball team has immersed itself in after winning a fourth straight game, this time 83-71 over host Louisiana College Saturday.
Four players scored in double figures as the YellowJackets won their 10
th game of the season. LeTourneau improved to 10-7 overall, 6-2 in the American Southwest Conference.
LETU went 28 of 69 from the floor for 40.6 percent, while Louisiana College was 25 of 67 for 37.3 percent. It was the second straight game the Jackets shot over 40 percent, marking the first time all season they reached that percentage in back-to-back games – on the road nevertheless.
Keauna Whitfield scored 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds.
Scruffy Hopkins scored 14 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and had four assists, two steals and a block. Â
Micayla Mikulski had 14 points on 5 of 7 shooting. She was 4 of 6 from 3-point range.
Flora Akingbade finished with 12 points on 4 of 7 shooting, while adding eight boards and two blocks. Akingbade had six of LETU's 19 offensive rebounds.
LeTourneau overcame a 25-24 Wildcats lead midway through the second quarter when
Kyndall Hardeman scored on an assist from
Ty Moon. The YellowJackets increased the lead to nine on a triple by Mikulski with 31 seconds remaining in the half.
Akingbade's layup 2:23 into the second half expanded the Jackets' lead to 15. The Wildcats cut it to nine on a triple by Alex Harrison at the 5:58 mark, but Whitfield knocked down a jumper a little over a minute later to touch off a six-point surge to bump the lead back to 15.
Jordan McClenton buried one of LETU's 10 threes to make it a 19-point advantage. Hopkins' field goal with 4:46 remaining in the game gave LeTourneau a 24-point lead to put it away.
Vanessa Cruz had eight assists and three steals, and
Malacia Guy six points, four assists and a steal. Kayla Kinney finished with 18 points on 6 of 12 shooting, and Zyunn Cormier had 15 points for Louisiana College.
The YellowJackets had 22 second chance points, and forced 16 turnovers. The Wildcats had 16 second chance points. LETU outscored Louisiana College, 28-18, in the paint. The Jackets out rebounded the Wildcats, 47-36, including a 21-11 advantage on the offensive glass.
LeTourneau will host East Texas Baptist 5:30 p.m. Thursday. LETU sits a game behind ETBU for second place in the ASC East.
