LONGVIEW – LeTourneau men's basketball team used a second half resurgence to get past Concordia Texas Thursday night, winning 103-92.
It was the first time since Jan. 18 the YellowJackets (17-5, 10-3 American Southwest Conference) topped the century mark, and the third time they've done so this season. LETU is 2-1 in those games.
"Concordia played extremely hard, so we had to be tough with the basketball all night," Jackets coach
Dan Miller said. "Of course, we would like to be single digits with turnovers, but 11 against Concordia allowed us to get the win tonight."
The YellowJackets forced 14 turnovers, scoring 19 points off of them. The Tornados scored 15 points off LETU's 11 turnovers.
LeTourneau shot 50 percent in the second half, hitting its stride 2:31 after the intermission when
John Argue connected on a three-pointer to put the Jackets ahead 11.
Andrew Eberhardt buried a three at the 15:40 mark, and was fouled for a four-point play to push the YellowJackets ahead, 59-44.
Justin Moore's layup with 14:01 to go gave LETU a 20-point lead.
Concordia (11-11, 6-7) cut it to 12 on Philip Miekle's free throw with 6:17 remaining.
Korrin Taylor scored 1:16 later as the YellowJackets bumped the lead back to 17. Eberhardt canned a three with 2:49 to play to make it an 18-point game. But the Tornados whittled the deficit down to eight when Ronnie Hamilton scored in transition with 1:28 left. Gonzalo Munoz's two free throws cut it to 99-92 with 37 seconds remaining, but
Kyle Matthews sank two free throws on LETU's next possession to put it away.
Concordia's bench outscored LeTourneau, 56-7. All five LeTourneau starters scored in double figures, headlined by Eberhardt's career-high 24 points on 7 of 14 shooting. He also had seven rebounds, four assists, a block and a steal.
Nate West finished with 24 points, seven assists, eight rebounds and three blocks before fouling out. Moore had 21 points, nine rebounds, six assists and three steals. Argue had 16 points, 10 boards and a block. Taylor had 11 points and two steals.
"I'm proud of the guys for closing out the game against a good Concordia team that played hard until the end," Miller said.
The YellowJackets went a season-high 30 of 41 from the free throw line. The Tornados were 21 of 29. LETU had 21 assists – the seventh time it has had at least 20 this season.
"We have to be focused for 40 minutes against a very talented UHMB team on Saturday," Miller said. "And we hope to see some high school players come out for high school team day."
The YellowJackets will host Mary Hardin-Baylor 3 p.m. Saturday.
