LONGVIEW – LeTourneau women's basketball team overcame a fourth quarter deficit to pull out a 63-60 win over Concordia Texas Thursday night.
The YellowJackets (12-10, 8-5 American Southwest Conference) solidified its hold on third place in the league's East Division standings. Concordia (9-13, 6-7) remains third in the West.
Trailing 51-47 with 8:48 to play, the Jackets rallied to take a one-point lead when
Keauna Whitfield scored in transition.
Micayla Mikulski hit a three-pointer with 6:07 to go to put the YellowJackets ahead 55-52. Havyn Perez scored almost three minutes later as the Tornados reclaimed a one-point lead. Mikulski, who finished with 27 points on 8 of 18 shooting, knocked down a jumper on the next trip down the floor as the pendulum swung back to LETU, 57-56.
Both teams sank a pair of free throws to keep the Jackets ahead by one.
Malacia Guy sank two free throws with 24 seconds left as LeTourneau crept ahead, 61-58. Kaycie Dunkerley hit a pair from the line with 15 seconds remaining to pull the Tornados within, 61-60. Guy split a pair from the stripe, and after a missed three-pointer by Concordia, Whitfield sank one of two at the line to put it away.
The YellowJackets outscored the Tornados, 18-11, in the fourth quarter. LETU was 11 of 14 at the line in the final period. Concordia went 7 of 8 from the stripe in the quarter.
Mikulski was 7 of 8 from the free throw line and 4 of 8 from beyond the 3-point line. She added seven rebounds and a steal before fouling out. Whitfield finished with 12 points, 11 rebounds, four assists and a block.
Scruffy Hopkins added eight rebounds, three steals and three assists.
Vanessa Cruz had six points, seven rebounds and four assists.
Bailey Lightfoot had six points.
LeTourneau led by as many as 11 in the first quarter, but Concordia shot 61.5 percent in the second quarter, going 8 of 13 from the floor to pull within 36-34 at the break. The Tornados outscored the YellowJackets, 15-9, in the third quarter to take a lead into the fourth.
LETU outrebounded Concordia, 49-43.
The YellowJackets will host No. 17 Mary Hardin-Baylor 1 p.m. Saturday.
