LETU Drops Doubleheader to No. 1 TLU

LONGVIEW – LeTourneau's softball team dropped a doubleheader to defending NCAA Division III national champion Texas Lutheran Saturday by identical 6-3 scores.

The YellowJackets (4-2) outhit the No. 1-ranked Bulldogs, 8-7, in the first game. LETU jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first two innings, cashing in on Callie Poore's RBI double to center in the first. Hana Bonner homered to left in the second, but only Ashley Crawford's run scored after the umpires took away Bonner's run when she was interfered with by a fan as she rounded third base. Bonner was credited with a hit and an RBI on the play.

Crawford put the Jackets up 3-0 in the third when she doubled through the right side. But TLU (6-0) picked up a run in the fourth and fifth innings before doing the rest of the damage in the sixth. The Bulldogs scored four runs in the sixth on a bases loaded walk, a wild pitch, an RBI double by Kelly Jurden and a sacrifice bunt.

Crawford was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Poore went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Bonner was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Katelyn Trombley was 1-for-3 with a stolen base. Maycie Walton went 1-for-2, and Madison Johnson had a pinch hit single down the right field line in the seventh.

Ashley DeCock took the loss after allowing two runs and two walks in an inning of relief. Sidney Ouellette was the winning pitcher, going 4 1/3 innings in relief, allowing one hit and no runs.

In the second game, Texas Lutheran got out to a 4-0 lead through six innings before LeTourneau mounted a little comeback in the bottom half of the sixth. Trombley reached on an error, allowing Johnson to score. Poore scored on a wild pitch, and Bonner reached base on an error, allowing Trombley to score. That cut the Bulldogs' lead to 4-3. But Chassety Raines hit a two-run homer in the seventh as TLU put it away.

Poore went 2-for-3. Madelyn Tannery and Emilee Anderson each went 1-for-3. TLU's Madisyn Cates was 2-for-3, and Rebecca Snow 3-for-4.

Ashlyn Strother picked up the win, going 5 1/3 innings and allowing five hits, two walks and two runs. She struck out five. Tannery took the loss, yielding six hits, two runs and four walks while fanning two in 4 1/3 innings.

The YellowJackets will open American Southwest Conference play Friday at Sul Ross State.
