ALPINE, Texas – Eyeballing a Saturday sweep.
That's the predicament LeTourneau's softball team is in after taking the first two games of the three-game American Southwest Conference-opening series from Sul Ross State. The YellowJackets won the first game, 11-5, before wrapping up the day with a 7-3 victory in the second. The Jackets (6-2, 2-0 ASC) pounded 16 hits in the opener and 12 more in the nightcap.
In the first game,
Emilee Anderson and
Hana Bonner each went 3-for-4, and
Ethel Warren was 3-for-5 with an RBI.
Callie Poore was 2-for-3 with three RBI.
Ashley Crawford had two hits, and drove in a run.
LETU took a 6-1 lead in the third on
Katelyn Trombley's run-scoring single to center and Crawford's RBI single to right. SRSU pulled within 7-4 in the fifth, but the Jackets tacked on a pair of runs in each of the last two innings to seal the deal.
Poore belted a two-run homer to right,
Sadie Morgan drove in
Macy Clevenger, and
Amber Fillbrandt laced a single to right to score Bonner.
Ashley DeCock got the win in relief, going the final five innings, and allowing six hits and two runs, while striking out three.
In the second game, Trombley bashed a three-run homer to right in the first inning, and the YellowJackets never trailed.
Madelyn Tannery drove in a run in the third on a single to left, and Trombley belted a run-scoring triple in the fourth to give LETU a six-run lead.
After Sul Ross State loaded the bases in the seventh with the tying run at the plate,
Jade Merrell got a strikeout, used her defense to cut down a runner at the plate and then coaxed a lineout to end the game.
Tannery worked three innings, allowing two runs and four walks to pick up the win in middle relief for
Hannah Welch, who went three innings, yielding three hits, a run and two walks. Merrell worked a perfect seventh for the save.
Trombley collected three hits and four RBI.
Hunter Handley was 2-for-2. Anderson had three hits, and Warren had two.
The YellowJackets and Lobos will meet 12 p.m. Saturday in the finale.
