Softball Drops Pair to Open NFCA Leadoff Classic

Jackets fall to No. 14 St. Thomas, national runner-up Emory

TUCSON, Ariz. – LeTourneau University's softball team dropped a pair of games Friday at the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division III Leadoff Classic. The YellowJackets lost the first game to 14th-ranked St. Thomas (Minn.), 10-8, before falling to Emory (Ga.), 12-0, in the second game at Lincoln Park.

LeTourneau (9-5) took a 7-0 lead on the Tommies (2-1) in the opening game, but couldn't hold on. St. Thomas scored eight runs in the bottom of the third to take over.

Callie Poore's two-run single in the first gave the Jackets a 2-0 lead. Madelyn Tannery singled, allowing Poore to score. Tannery then scored when Ashley Crawford reached safely on an error. Hana Bonner reached on an error, allowing Crawford to score. That spotted the YellowJackets a 5-0 lead after the first.

In the second inning, Tannery walked with the bases loaded to give the Jackets a six-run lead. Taylor Nichols crushed a solo home run to left in the third to make it 7-0.

But St. Thomas sent 13 batters to the plate in the bottom half of the inning, scoring eight runs on five hits and three errors to take a one-run lead. The Tommies tacked on two more runs in the sixth to extend the lead to 10-7.

LETU picked up a late run in the top of the seventh when Emilee Anderson scored on a wild pitch, but the Jackets couldn't push the tying runs across.

Kennedi Dillow, Ethel Warren and Nichols each went 2-for-4. Tannery was 1-for-2 with two walks. UST's Annie Naughton was 3-for-4, and Elise Barnes was 2-for-4 with two RBI.

LeTourneau starter Bailey Richey gave up five runs on five hits and a walk, while striking out two batters. Reliever Ashley DeCock (4-2) took the loss, allowing six hits, five runs, two earned, and a walk, while fanning two.

Kendall Hopkins worked five innings for the win, allowing two runs, one earned, and three walks. She struck out eight. Megan Baniecke picked up the save, working the final inning and a third, allowing an unearned run and two walks, while striking out two.

In the second game, Emory (5-3) scored nine runs in the first inning, using 17 batters to go through three LETU pitchers. The Jackets never recovered.

Emory, last year's national runner-up, had 10 hits, while Dillow and Crawford accounted for LETU's two hits.

Tannery took the loss after giving up four runs, a hit and two walks in the first inning. Samantha Akers faced two batters to end the game, and did not allow a baserunner. Trinity Pizzuti earned the win for the Eagles after giving up two hits and two walks in three innings of shutout relief.

The YellowJackets will meet No. 12 Central (Iowa) at 10 a.m. CT and Alma (Mich.) at noon Saturday in the second of three days at the NFCA Leadoff Classic.
