HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – LeTourneau University men's tennis team won its first match of the Hilton Head Spring Tennis Fest Monday, beating Lynchburg, 6-3.
The YellowJackets (6-3) fell behind in doubles, but used strong singles to play to secure their first win of the four-match trip.
Miles Grubbs and
Julian Lee defeated Carter McCleary and Cooper Brewen, 8-1, at No. 3 doubles after the Jackets top two positions dropped their pairs matches. Lynchburg (4-2) picked up another point at No. 1 singles, but the YellowJackets ran the table in straight sets in the rest of the matches to seal the victory.
Christian Farris beat Colton Mullins, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 2 singles.
Julian Lee was a 7-5, 6-2 winner over Daniel Christian at No. 3.
Nathan Schmidt beat Vincent Oliver, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 4.
Rodrigo Vazquez Chairez defeated McCleary, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 5. Grubbs beat Brewen, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 6 singles.
LETU won the first two singles points to take a 3-2 lead. After Lynchburg's Juan Borga beat
Jimmie Henson, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 1 singles, the Hornets tied the match at 3-3. But Lee's victory at the No. 3 spot clinched the victory. Lee gutted out a tough first set before putting his opponent away in the second set.
The YellowJackets will meet Millikin at 7:30 a.m. CT Tuesday at Hilton Head Beach & Tennis.
