LONGVIEW, Texas – An efficient offensive performance and a plethora of miscues by the guests culminated in a crucial American Southwest Conference victory while creating a bit of history in LeTourneau's volleyball victory Friday night at Solheim Arena.
The Yellowjackets defeated McMurry for the first time in school history and they did it convincingly, sweeping the match 25-8, 25-11, 25,10, never trailing and tied once in less the 55-minute contest. The offense registered 43 kills and committed just for attack errors.
LeTourneau (9-5, 4-3 ASC) scored the first 11 points of the match, establishing the tone of the evening. The War Hawks (4-6, 2-5) struggled to find their footing and found themselves in a 1-0 deficit after a 17-point loss.
Each set played the same script with the Yellowjackets building 11-3 and 10-4 advantages in the following games. McMurry reached double-digits in the middle set, trimming the deficit to 19-10 before the home squad rattled off six points in succession to grab a 2-0 edge.
The Yellowjackets led 18-10 in the final set when they closed to match point with two aces from
Courtney Edge and four errors by the guests. Kaylie Vasil staved off the inevitable for one rally before
Jenna Curran smashed home the final point of the night.
Inside the Numbers
Every available player on the YellowJackets appeared in the match.
McMurry committed 16 attack errors, while totaling 21 successful attempts.
The War Hawks registered six service errors, five receiving gaffs and four ball-handling mistakes, while the Yellowjackets totaled six miscues.
LeTourneau held McMurry to the third-lowest hitting percentage of the season at five percent, while the 45.9 percent by the Yellowjackets is over 20 points higher than the previous best this season.
Kaci Monk paced LeTourneau with 10 kills, while
Reina Lawson handed out 19 assists and
Samantha Winkel added 15.
Courtney Edge dug a team-high 18 balls and
Allison Smith rejected five shots.
LeTourneau sent 12 attempts back where they came from while the guest turned away two.
Kianna Crow tallied nine kills, passing the 1,200-kill plateau.
The Yellowjackets host Hardin-Simmons at 2 p.m. Saturday.
