UMHB sweeps volleyball

BELTON, Texas – LETU volleyball was swept 3-0 (14-25, 14-25, 23-25) by Mary Hardin-Baylor at the Mayborn Campus Center Saturday.

With the setback, the Yellowjackets fell to 13-9 this season, including 8-7 in American Southwest Conference play.

They hold the sixth and final qualifying sport for the conference tournament. A win in one of the final three matches secures a spot for the 'Jackets. They also get in with a loss by McMurry and Hardin-Simmons.

The Cru secured the regular-season title and top seed in the league championship with the victory, improving to 22-1, 16-1.

UMHB ran off 13 of the final 14 points in the opening set to grab the early advantage. The first part of the game was close, and Reina Lawson gave LETU a 13-12 lead when she dropped in a service ace.

The second set was never in doubt. Mary Hardin-Baylor converted 13-of-27 attacks with one error and the defense prevented the Yellowjackets from stringing together points in succession until leading 23-10. A kill by Kianna Crow, two aces by Natalie Connelly and a miscue by the hosts cut the deficit to nine.

Game three's final margin was just two, but it was another late run by LETU that closed the gap. Up two at 12-10, UMHB raced out to a 18-13 before the Yellowjackets got the equalizer on an ace by
Samantha Winkle at 18-18. They were unable to take the lead the rest of the way.

The Yellowjackets conclude the 2021 regular season with three matches at Solheim, beginning with a 6 p.m. tilt against Belhaven Monday Oct. 25.
