LONGVIEW, Texas – On senior day, the LETU volleyball team swept the season series with a 3-0 decision over Howard Payne in an American Southwest Conference match at Solheim Arena Saturday.
Cruising to the 25-13, 25-16, 25-12 victory, the Yellowjackets improved to 16-9 on the season, including 11-7 in league play . HPU finished the campaign at 4-21, 2-15.
'Jackets head coach
Mallory Matthews became just the second coach in program history to win 50 games, doing so in 79 games.
The victory capped of the third winning season in succession and finishing tied for third in the conference with ETBU. LETU swept the season series against the Tigers, earning the third seed in the
ASC Volleyball Championship.
An early 6-0 spurt in the opening set expanded LETU's advantage to 12-4 en route to the 1-0 lead. They converted
29 percent of their attacks, while holding the guests to under
3 percent.
The offense turned up the pressure, smashing 13 kills on 25 attempts and hitting
33.3 percent, while Howard Payne was held to
0.00 percent. Knotted at 5-5, LETU outscored HPU 20-11,
taking a commanding 2-0 margin.
Set three was another double-digit result, mostly due to a 12-4 run by the Yellowjackets.
Natalie Connelly paced the 'Jackets with 12 kills, while
Courtney Edge registered 21 digs.
Samantha Winkel and
Natalie Davenport set up the offense, dishing out 17 assists each.

The conference tournament is at UMBH in Belton, Texas, Nov. 4-6. LETU and
Concordia Texas meet in the quarterfinals Thursday, Nov. 4, at 7:30 p.m. The teams split the season series, playing nine of a possible 10 sets.
