Eberhardt's buzzer beater lifts LETU over ETBU

LONGVIEW, Texas – It may not be the shot heard around the world, but Andrew Eberhardt's buzzer beater sent shockwave's through Solheim Arena Saturday.

Eberhardt's 35-foot prayer as time expired touched nothing but net, lifted LETU to an instant-classic 71-70 victory over ETBU, sparking hysteria throughout the arena.

The YellowJackets remained undefeated at 8-0 overall, including 4-0 in ASC play, stormed the court as the home fans went ecstatic in the stands. On the opposite side of the Highway 80 Rivalry, the Tigers were dejected and in disbelief, dropping to 2-6, 0-3.

Trailing by two with 11 seconds left in regulation, after a Jayden Williams pushed ETBU in front at 70-68. LETU fumbled its next possession out of bounds, giving the Tigers the ball and the lead with five seconds.

Ryan Elzy went to the free-throw line, with a chance to ice the game away, after a quick foul on the ensuing inbounds play. Kyle Matthews corralled the miss on the front-end of the one-and-one.

He scurried up the left sideline and found Eberhardt streaking down the right side unmarked. Matthews fired a perfect pass to his longtime friend and teammate, dating back to their high school days, hitting him in stride as he crossed the timeline. Eberhardt took one stride and launched his heave.

Eberhardt, who rebounded from a tough shooting performance against Belhaven Thursday, Eberhardt bookended the thriller with buckets from distance. He put the YellowJackets up 3-0 with a jumper in the corner, converting half of his attempts in the contest.

LETU appeared poise to put the game away before halftime, amassing an 18-point margin, its largest lead of the day at 35-17, with 6:15 until intermission. ETBU clawed its way back in and Jayden Williams sliced the deficit to 43-32 with a prayer of his own, sinking a 30-footer as the horn sounded.

Deonte Jackson, who finished with 16 points, made a driving layup with 14:50 remaining, putting his side up by a dozen. An 18-4 spurt over the next seven and a half minutes gave the guests their first advantage of the tilt. A pair of ties and a trio of lead changes set up the dramatic ending.

Elijah Gerber came off the bench and netted the first double-digit scoring performance of his career. He tallied 10 points, hitting 5-of-8 from the field. Matthews delivered his first-career double-double, chipping in 10 points, grabbing 11 boards, adding four assists, three steals and swatting away three would-be attempts by the opposition.
