AUSTIN, Texas – Déjà vu. A steal and layup by
Concordia Texas with three seconds remaining sent the LETU men's basketball team back to East Texas with their second overtime loss in a 24-hour span.
The 89-87 setback at the Concordia Fieldhouse Sunday, dropped the YellowJackets to 8-2 overall, including 4-2 in American Southwest Conference play, while CTX moved to 6-3, 3-2.
LETU had its chances to close out the
Tornados in both regulation and the extra period. Knotted at 79-79, the YellowJackets the earned three trips to the charity stripe in the final 90 seconds.
They missed 4 of 6, including a pair with 14 seconds remaining and up 81-79. CTX grabbed the rebound and cashed in with a floater in the paint with one second remaining. In overtime and the score even at 87-87, LETU turned the ball over twice in the final 30 seconds.
The teams traded buckets and runs in a see-saw affair that featured 13 lead changes and 11 times. Both sides held their largest margins in the opening 20 minutes and neither side was able to move in front by double-digits.
CTX built an eight-point gap with 13:45 to go in the first period. LETU responded with seven in succession and the teams remained nip-and-tuck the rest of the frame. The
Tornados held a 37-34 advantage at the intermission.
Andrew Eberhardt led five YellowJackets in double-digit scoring, with 16, while
Kyle Matthews notched the second double-double of his career. He dropped in 11 points and grabbed 14 rebounds.
Deonte Jackson dropped in 15, adding seven assists and five rebounds.
Warren Richardson chipped in with 13 points and six boards.
Christian Adams finished with 12 points, while
Elijah Gerber added nine.
