Tough Third Quarter Derails Shorthanded Jackets

SAN ANTONIO – LeTourneau women's basketball team fell on the road to Trinity University, 75-57, in a cross-conference matchup Thursday afternoon.

Trinity, who is receiving votes in the NCAA Division III National poll, shot 48% from the field, while the YellowJackets shot 33%.

Despite being shorthanded, LETU only trailed by one at the end of the first period after a late foul on a three-point attempt sent TU's Bailey Timmons to the line, sinking 2-3. The Tigers extended its lead to six at the beginning of the second when Ava Limoncello converted on a fast-break layup. The Jackets stung back, going on an 8-1 run after Ajanae Thomas connected from long range. Malacia Guy capped off the run with a three-point dagger of her own, giving LETU a one-point advantage with 2:54 left in the half, 27-26. The Tigers' Maggie Robbins made a layup to put TU back ahead, but Thomas swished two free throws to grant LeTourneau a one-point lead heading into halftime.

LeTourneau shot 34% in the first half, while the Tigers shot 35%. The Jackets forced Trinity into 10 first half turnovers. LETU only tallied five.

The Tigers of Trinity came out on fire to start the third period, sparking a 12-2 run to take a nine-point lead. Thomas halted the run after Keauna Whitfield found her for a three-pointer in transition, closing the gap down to six, 46-32. Trinity's Timmons dashed down the floor for a layup, but Whitfield quickly answered when she sliced through the Tiger defense for two, putting LETU down six again.
