LONGVIEW – LeTourneau University's volleyball team beat Hardin-Simmons, 25-20, 18-25, 25-17, 25-12, Friday night at Solheim Arena.
It is the YellowJackets' third straight win over the Cowgirls. LeTourneau improved to 3-0, while Hardin-Simmons fell to 0-2.
Kianna Crow had 12 kills, and
Skylar Fowler pounded 11 as LETU hit .198. HSU was held to an .040 attack percentage.
In the first set, LETU broke a 20-20 tie when Crow put away one of
Natalie Davenport's 15 assists. Fowler banged down the next point on
Madison Denega's serve before a pair of Cowgirls errors put the Jackets up 24-20.
Natalie Connelly's kill on the next serve gave LeTourneau a 1-0 lead in the match.
The YellowJackets hit .265 in the first set. The Cowgirls hit .095.
After Hardin-Simmons won the next set, LeTourneau recovered from a 7-2 deficit early in the third set when
Kylie Cobb put down one of
Samantha Winkel's 16 assists to pull LeTourneau within a point. The Cowgirls crept back ahead 12-8 before the Jackets used a 4-0 run to pull even. HSU won the next two points, but LETU rattled off the next seven points which included a pair of aces by Cobb, a kill by Connelly and another by Fowler. That gave the YellowJackets a 19-14 lead. The Cowgirls pulled within three, but the Jackets ran off the next five points to build their lead out to eight, and Crow's kill two serves later gave LeTourneau a 2-1 lead in the match.
LETU had a .216 hitting percentage in the third set. HSU hit .000.
LeTourneau jumped all over Hardin-Simmons in the final set, reeling off eight straight points on Cobb's serve. Connelly and Fowler punctuated the run with a block.
Avery Mabery's kill extended the lead to 15-4.
Allison Smith added another to make it 17-9. Connelly put the match away with a pair of aces.
Connelly and Cobb each had three aces. Connelly also had three blocks, while Cobb and Fowler had two apiece. Smith had six kills, while hitting .556. Fowler had a .500 attack percentage.
Courtney Edge had 23 digs, Crow had 15 and Davenport 13.
LeTourneau will host Louisiana College Feb. 13 in a pair of matches beginning at 11 a.m. to open American Southwest Conference play.
