CLARKSVILLE, Ark. -- LeTourneau University's men's basketball team's season came to an end in the American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament quarterfinals Wednesday. The fourth-seeded YellowJackets lost to top seed Ozarks, 68-60.
Â
"My congratulations are in order to Ozarks on the win and a good season," LETU coach
Dan Miller said. "We just couldn't get our shots to fall tonight. Both teams played great defense, and they just made a few more shots than us."
Â
LeTourneau (7-4) went 4 of 22 from three-point range, while shooting 39 percent from the field. Ozarks (8-4) went 24 of 51 from the floor for 47 percent.
Â
LETU's
Deonte Jackson scored 15 points, and had four rebounds, a block and a steal.
John Argue had 13 points, five rebounds, a block and a steal.
Kyle Matthews had eight points, 11 boards and four assists.
Â
"I am so proud of our guys for the grit and fight they showed, not only tonight, but all season through a lot of adversity and pauses," Miller said.
Â
LETU returned to the court last week after a 26-day layoff. The Jackets secured a big win on the road at Belhaven Friday to qualify for the league postseason tournament for the sixth straight year.
Â
LeTourneau and Ozarks battled through seven ties and three lead changes. The Eagles led 34-32 at halftime.
Â
The YellowJackets went on an 8-0 run to open the second half, taking a six-point lead on Argue's basket at the 17:40 mark. The Eagles went on a 6-0 run of their own to tie it before Jackson scored in the paint. Zach Byrd's transition triple at the 13:19 mark started an 8-0 Ozarks run that put the Eagles up, 50-44. Ozarks extended its lead to nine on another basket by Byrd before
Andrew Eberhardt's transition lay-in and
Warren Richardson's field goal in the paint kept the YellowJackets within seven.
Kyce Wilson hit a 3-pointer with 8:13 to go to make it a four-point game. Bryson Johnson sank two free throws as Ozarks bumped its lead out to eight, but Argue scored, and
Isaac Stolzenburg knocked down a jumper in the paint to pull LETU back within four at the 2:37 mark.
Â
After Johnson sank two free throws, Matthews hit two of his own with 1:10 remaining, keeping the Jackets within four. But the Jackets missed a couple shots in the final 30 seconds, and Zach Bobo threw down a dunk as the Eagles punctuated the win to advance.
Â
LeTourneau's bench was outscored, 24-11. The Jackets were outrebounded, 33-28. Â
Â
"We are very excited about our future as we return all our starters and the majority of our team," Miller said. "I'm also proud of how this team came together this season, and how they care about each other on and off the court."
