Jackets Sting Blazers in ASC Matchup

JACKSON, Miss. – LeTourneau University's Volleyball team swept Belhaven in a pair of matches Thursday in Jackson, Mississippi. The YellowJackets (12-5, 8-5 American Southwest Conference) won the first match, 25-12, 25-20, 25-17, before clinching the second, 25-10, 25-10, 25-20. 

In the first match, Kianna Crow had 17 kills, seven digs, one block and a serving ace, while also putting together a .387 attack rate. With those 17 kills, Crow surpasses 1,000 kills for her career, moving her up to third on the LETU career kills list. Natalie Davenport had 10 assists and a career high seven serving aces, while Samantha Winkel had 15 assists and two serving aces. Natalie Connelly, Madison Denega and Allison Smith all slammed down five kills a piece. Connelly and Smith each recorded two blocks. Courtney Edge had 16 digs, and Avery Mabery had three kills and one block. 

In the second match, Crow had 13 kills, seven digs, four serving aces and a block. Connelly tallied nine kills, five digs, two block and an ace, while hitting creating a whopping .750 attack percentage. Davenport had 14 assists and four serving aces. Winkel totaled 16 assists, and Edge had 18 digs and an ace. Smith and Mabery each had six kills. Denega recorded four kills, while Skylar Fowler recorded three. Kylie Cobb had nine digs and a kill. 

LETU hit .305 in the first match, while Belhaven (3-13, 3-11) was held to a .143 attack rate. In the second match, the Jackets hit .420, and the Blazers .115. 

After a serving error by Belhaven's Megan Nobles, the YellowJackets sparked a 9-1 run, behind the serving of Winkel, who tallied two serving aces during this run. LETU took a 14-5 advantage after the run. The Blazers put together a four point surge of their own, pulling the deficit closer, 14-9. Crow pounded down a kill from Winkel to halt the Belhaven run. LETU iced the first set on a serving ace from Crow. In the second set, Davenport had the hot serving hand, totaling four serving aces. After a solo block from Connelly, the Jackets held an 11-5 lead over the Blazers, before going on a 7-3 run to close out the second set. Belhaven held a slight 7-5 lead over LETU, but two back to back kills from Mabery and Smith got the ball rolling for the YellowJackets in the final set. Behind the serving of Natalie Connelly, LETU tallied seven unanswered points, ultimately capturing the match win. 

The Jackets hit .417 in the first set, holding Belhaven to a .074 attack percentage. LETU had 13 aces, while the Blazers recorded three. 

In the second match, the YellowJackets jumped out to a great start early, creating a 20-8 lead Belhaven. A kill by Connelly from Freshman Addison Mints, put the first set away, giving LeTourneau a 1-0 match advantage. LETU tallied 16 kills and a .538 attack percentage in the first set. In the second set, the Blazers tied the game early, 1-1, but the YellowJackets would make sure that was the closest they would get. After nine unanswered points behind the serving of Davenport, who totaled three aces during this run, the YellowJackets took a commanding 14-2 lead. A kill from Fowler on an assist by Winkel, moved the LETU lead, 20-8. Cobb sealed the deal with a kill from Edge, as the Jackets took set two. In the decisive set that featured four lead changes, the Blazers pulled within, 18-17. A six point run by the YellowJackets, pushed the lead, 24-17. After a service eror by the Blazer's Sydney McEachern, LeTourneau completed the clean sweep, winning the final set. 

LETU had 10 aces, while the Blazers had three. The YellowJackets totaled 39 assists, compared to Belhaven's 17. 

LeTourneau will be back in action on Wednesday as they take on cross town rival East Texas Baptist University at Solheim Arena.
