Jackets Come up Short at HSU

ABILENE, Texas – LeTourneau's softball team dropped the final two games of the series at Hardin-Simmons Saturday, 3-2 and 4-1.
 
The YellowJackets (5-9, 4-8 American Southwest Conference) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning of Game 1 when Callie Poore ripped a single to right to score Lauren Wilking. The Cowgirls (8-11, 4-5) answered back with two runs in the second. Hana Bonner's RBI double to score Graci Hart in the sixth tied the game at 2-2. But HSU won it in the bottom of the seventh after an error led to the gamewinning run.
 
Ashley Crawford, Poore and Bonner all went 1-for-3. Wilking was 1-for-4 with a stolen base.
 
HSU's Kaylen Washington went the distance, allowing four hits, two runs, one earned and no walks. She had four strikeouts. LETU's Hannah Welch took the loss, giving up five hits, three runs, two earned, and six walks. She struck out two.
 
In the second game, the Cowgirls opened up a three-run lead in the first. The Jackets got one back in the sixth when Katelyn Trombley had a two-out single to center to score Crawford. But LETU couldn't push another run across, stranding two runners. Hardin-Simmons added a run in its half of the inning to make it 4-1. LETU stranded two more runners in the seventh as HSU wrapped it up.
 
Trombley was 2-for-3 with a double. Crawford was 1-for-3. Alysa Torres, Wilking, Bonner and Poore each were 1-for-4.
 
Aubrianna Salazar picked up the win, allowing six hits, an unearned run and a walk, while recording three strikeouts in six innings. Kelly Shackelford worked the last inning to earn the save, allowing a hit and a walk. Welch took the loss, giving up three runs on three hits and no walks. Bailey Richey worked six innings, surrendering an unearned run on four hits and a walk. She fanned eight.
 
Both teams had seven hits.
 
The YellowJackets will host Louisiana College 6 p.m. Thursday and 12 p.m. Friday.
