LETU Overcome by CTX's Late-Inning Rally in Home Opener

LONGVIEW – LeTourneau University's baseball team let one get away Friday night, losing 7-4 to Concordia Texas in the home opener.

The YellowJackets (5-3, 3-1 American Southwest Conference) took a 3-1 lead into the seventh inning, but after starter Raul Martinez took a curtain call, following a six-inning, 112-pitch, four-hit, three-walk and five-strikeout performance, the floodgates opened. Concordia Texas (2-2, 2-2) scored five runs in the top of the seventh to spoil a second masterful outing by Martinez.

The same two teams will meet for a doubleheader at noon Saturday.

LETU took a two-run lead in the bottom of the fourth when Dane Jones tripled to right center, scoring Lane Williams and Weston McKinley. That broke a 1-1 tie after Concordia Texas' Mason Dubois had a sacrifice fly to center to score Corbin Cross.

Jaggar Vaughn's solo homer to left to lead off the second inning gave the YellowJackets a 1-0 lead.

Martinez stranded a Tornados' runner on third to end the third inning. He avoided danger in the fourth, stranding two runners in the fourth when he induced a two-out popup with runners on the corners. In the fifth, following a two-out double by Brandon Goynes, Martinez intentionally walked the next hitter before getting Cross to pop up to the second baseman to end the inning.

Bryce Brueggemeyer singled to left center, moving Cody Stanley to second with one out in the bottom half of the fifth. But the YellowJackets couldn't push a run across.

The Tornados capitalized in the seventh, scoring five runs on three hits and three errors to take a 6-3 lead. They added a run in the eighth before the YellowJackets got one back in the bottom half of the inning. LETU loaded the bases on two walks and a hit batsman. Kameron Lindsey's RBI groundout scored Noah Arellano to make it 7-4. After Jackets reliever Calvin Lopez retired the last five batters he faced, Josh White walked to open the bottom of the ninth. Brueggemeyer had a one-out single through the left side, bringing the tying run to the plate. But the Jackets went quietly, stranding the two runners to end the game.

Brueggemeyer was 2-for-5. Jones went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Vaughn and Williams each went 1-for-3.

It was LETU's first game at Conrad-Vernon Field since March 7 last year before the pandemic shut down the world.

LETU has lost nine straight to Concordia Texas. The YellowJackets' last win over the Tornados was April 23, 2016 in Austin, Texas. Their last home win over Concordia came on March 29, 2014.
