LONGVIEW – LeTourneau's baseball team lost a doubleheader to Concordia Texas Saturday, 3-1 in 10 innings and 7-1.
Jaggar Vaughn's first inning RBI groundout to score
Cody Stanley gave the YellowJackets (5-5, 3-3 American Southwest Conference) a 1-0 lead in the first game. Concordia (4-2, 4-2) tied it in the fifth when Casen Novak doubled in a run.
The Jackets loaded the bases in the seventh after
Kyle Maysonave walked,
Bryce Brueggemeyer was issued an intentional free pass, and
David Pugh beat out an infield single. But the Tornados averted danger when reliever Michael Smith induced a groundout to third to end the inning.
With a runner on third, Jackets reliever
Kolton Eberlan got Novak on strikes in the top of the ninth to keep the game tied. Maysonave reached base on an error to open the bottom of the inning, and Stanley's single to center moved him to second. But the Jackets ran themselves out of the inning to end the threat.
In the top of the 10
th, Grayson Lee hit a two-run homer to give the Tornados a two-run lead. The YellowJackets put runners on the corners when
Dane Jones infield single moved Vaughn to third. But Smith got a strikeout to end the game.
Smith went the final 4 2/3 innings, allowing three hits, no runs and four walks, and struck out four to pick up the win in relief. Eberlan suffered the loss after giving up five hits, two runs and a walk, while striking out four in 3 2/3 innings of relief. Jackets starter
Jared Schurig pitched five innings, yielding seven hits, one run and no walks, and struck out five.
Stanley was 2-for-3. Brueggemeyer went 1-for-3 with a double and two walks.
Noah Arellano was 1-for-3. Pugh, Jones and
Anthony Ybarra each had one hit.
In the second game, LETU took a 1-0 lead when Jones singled to open the inning, and advanced to second on an error and third on a wild pitch. He scored with one out when
Weston McKinley drove a ball into right that Concordia outfielder Kalen Moreno misplayed. The Tornados tied the game in the sixth, and busted loose for six runs in the seventh to wrap up the series.
LeTourneau starter
Kolbey Sharpe suffered the loss after allowing four runs, one of which was earned, on seven hits, three walks and seven strikeouts in six innings of work. Tornados reliever Thomas Houle picked up the win in 2 2/3 innings, allowing a hit, no walks, and no runs, while fanning five.
Jones had two hits in three at-bats. Brueggemeyer and Arellano each had one in three trips to the plate. McKinley was 1-for-2.
LETU will meet Centenary in a doubleheader on the road Friday before returning home for a twin bill against the Gents on Saturday.
