Volleyball Bows Out in 5-Set ASC Quarterfinals

Crow breaks career kills record

BELTON, Texas – LeTourneau University's volleyball team lost to McMurry in a back-and-forth five-set American Southwest Conference quarterfinal match Friday. The YellowJackets fell, 21-25, 33-31, 21-25, 25-20, 15-11.
 
The second set was the longest in ASC Championship Tournament history since the implementation of the 25-point scoring was put in place.
 
LETU finished its season with a 16-6 record. McMurry advanced to the semifinals at 13-4.
 
Kianna Crow had 20 kills to become the school's all-time leader, surpassing Jennifer McCool's record of 1,078. Crow now has 1,089 kills.
 
Crow had back-to-back kills in the opening set, and combined with Natalie Connelly on a block that put LeTourneau ahead 21-17. After the War Hawks won the next two points, Connelly banged down a ball to make it 22-19. McMurry used a kill from Megan Martinez to pull within two before Madison Denega pounded a kill, and a War Hawks ball handling error moved LeTourneau within a point of winning the first set. Following a McMurry sideout, Allison Smith's kill gave the YellowJackets a 1-0 lead in the match.
 
LeTourneau had 13 kills and five errors in the first set. McMurry had 11 kills and eight errors.
 
The Jackets, who hit .135 in the match with 58 kills and 32 errors, took a 24-23 lead in the second set. But an attack error on the next serve extended the set. The War Hawks used a kill by Martinez and an LETU attack error to take a 27-26 lead. Crow's kill on the next point kept the Jackets afloat. Connelly and Denega put up a block to make it 28-27 before Martinez had one of her 11 kills to tie it again. Following a War Hawks hitting error, Martinez had a kill and an ace to put McMurry up, 30-29. Another War Hawks error and a block by Denega and Smith gave the Jackets a chance to take a two sets lead before Vasil and Kianni Mitchell each had kills to reclaim the lead, 32-31. An LETU ballhandling error tied the match at a set apiece.
 
LeTourneau hit .208 in the second set. McMurry had a .173 attack percentage.
 
The YellowJackets raced out to an 8-1 lead in the third set. Samantha Winkel's kill extended the lead to 13-6. The War Hawks went on a 6-0 run to cut it to 14-13. After the two teams swapped points over the next four serves, LETU used a three-point run on a block by Denega and Smith, kill by Denega and a McMurry hitting error to build a 19-15 cushion. Following a sideout, the Jackets won the next three points on a block by Denega and Smith, kill by Crow and War Hawks attack error, stretching LETU's lead to six. McMurry ran off four straight points to pull within 22-20 before Crow banged down the next ball. Mitchell had a kill on the next serve, but Crow put down another ball, and Natalie Davenport ripped off an ace to put the YellowJackets up a set.
 
McMurry evened the match when it won the fourth set. The War Hawks had 11 kills and four errors. The Jackets had 11 kills and nine errors.
 
In the decisive set, LeTourneau jumped out to a 4-1 lead on Camryn Hill's putaway. The Jackets extended the lead to 7-4 on a kill by Crow. McMurry ran off nine straight points to seize control, 13-7. A kill by Crow and a pair of War Hawks errors cut it to 13-10. But Martinez and Tyler Richardson sandwiched kills around a McMurry attack error to close it out.
 
The YellowJackets had five kills and three errors in the fifth set. The War Hawks had seven kills and three errors.
 
Denega finished with 16 kills, 16 digs and six blocks. Smith had nine kills, seven blocks and a .333 hitting percentage. Connelly had five kills and seven blocks. Winkel had 25 assists and eight digs. Davenport had 20 assists and seven digs. Courtney Edge had 27 digs. Crow added 17 digs and two aces to her 20 kills.
 
The Jackets outblocked the War Hawks, 15-8. McMurry had 12 aces to LeTourneau's five.
 
It was LeTourneau's second straight winning season.
