ALPINE, Texas – LETU suffered one of its most disappointing losses of the campaign after a dominating second half by Sul Ross State at the Gallego Center Saturday.
The YellowJackets fall to 8-5 on the campaign, including 5-3 in American Southwest Conference, action after the 85-72 setback. The Lobos even their mark at 9-9, moving up to seventh in the 11-team league at 5-8.
Leading by as many as eight in the first quarter, LETU held just a two-point advantage after 20 minutes of action. Sul Ross State outscored the YellowJackets 49-34, after intermission, cruising to the 13-point victory.
Allaira Jones paced the LETU with 17 points but for the second game in succession came up one rebound shy of a double double. Keuna Whitfield,
Malacia Guy and
Ajanae Thomas joined Jones with at least 10 points.
The YellowJackets hit 50% (9 of 18) of their shots in the first period but converted just 36.4% (20 of 55) of their attmepts over the final 30 minutes of play.
Sul Ross State seized control of the tilt in the third stanza, outscoring LETU 28-12. The host drained 10 of 22 field-goal attempts, sinking 3 of 6 behind the three-point line. LETU went 7 of 21, missing all three shots from deep.
