LONGVIEW, Texas -- A week ago the LeTourneau men's soccer team was faced with having to win its final three matches, and get a little help, to make the ASC Tournament. Fast forward a week and the YellowJackets accomplished just that.
Russell Gray scored two goals and LeTourneau clinched a berth into the ASC Tournament with a 2-0 victory over Howard Payne on Senior Night at the Joyce Family Athletic Village.
LeTourneau (7-6-4, 3-4-2 ASC) won its final three matches with wins over Ozarks, Sul Ross, and Howard Payne to climb the conference standings and earn the No. 6 seed in next week's ASC Tournament. The YellowJackets will travel to Abilene to take on No. 3 seed Hardin-Simmons on Tuesday.
The seventh shutout of the season for LeTourneau came at the right time as
Raul Torrez and the defense made the two scores from Gray stand up. Torrez made two saves on the night as he collected his fourth shutout.
Gray put the YellowJackets on the board in the 12th minute. LeTourneau played the quick passing game as
Emad Mohamed won the ball back on the attacking half and slotted a pass to
Jordan Beltran, who one-touched a service into the box. Gray came from the backside of the box and played the ball past Howard Payne keeper Eduardo Flores for the goal.
That margin stood until the 88th minute when Gray added an insurance goal.
Syed Zain worked the ball into the box and left a short pass for Gray inside the box. Gray converted on the chance to give LeTourneau a 2-0 lead.
Gray's goals gives him a team-high seven on the year, including three over two matches this week. Gray has scored in three straight matches.
Howard Payne (6-7-4, 3-4-2 ASC) had limited chances throughout the match, thanks to the LeTourneau defense aided by
Bridger Roberdeau andÂ
Karson Johnson. LeTourneau held a 14-12 advantage in shots, led by Gray's five attempts.
Flores made four saves for Howard Payne, while Alexander Paz had five shots.
