ALPINE, Texas -- The LeTourneau volleyball team took Sul Ross State to five sets before falling 3-2 (25-16, 22-25, 25-17, 23-25, 15-9) on Saturday afternoon in Alpine.
LeTourneau (15-11, 8-8 ASC) still clinched the No. 4 seed in next week's ASC Tournament. The YellowJackets will take No. 5 seed Hardin-Simmons in the first round on Thursday at 5 p.m. in Richardson, Texas.Â
Allison Smith had 10 kills, five blocks, and three digs in the loss while
Alexis Bowen Johnson had nine kills and three blocks.
Kaci Monk and
Kaylyn Taylor added seven kills apiece with
Morgan Nix totaling 23 digs.
Reina Lawson added 18 assists with four service aces, while
Natalie Davenport had 14 assists with seven digs.
It was the second time this season the two teams played a five-set match. Back in September, LeTourneau was the victor on its home court.
On Saturday, Sul Ross took a 25-16 win in the opening set before LeTourneau rallied back to take the second set, 25-22. After a five-point run late in the second set that saw Sul Ross even the score, LeTourneau secured the final three points culminating in a combination block from
Allison Smith and
Emma Smith to take the win.
Sul Ross regained the lead with a 25-17 win in the third set, but LeTourneau answered back in the fourth. The YellowJackets sprinted ahead 17-7 after a kill from
Allison Smith and then held off a furious rally from Sul Ross to take the game, 25-23.Â
In the fifth, Sul Ross jumped out in front early and never relinquished the lead to complete the five-set win.
Annika Canaba had a triple-double for Sul Ross (8-13, 4-11 ASC) with 24 kills, 21 assists, and 10 digs.

LeTourneau will play Hardin-Simmons in the first round of the ASC Tournament on Thursday at UT Dallas in Richardson, Texas. Match time is set for 5 p.m.
