LETU Volleyball Splits on Saturday in Shreveport

SHREVEPORT, La. -- LeTourneau took the road for a doubleheader to face Dallas and Centenary. The YellowJackets having already faced Dallas were looking at a familiar opponent for game one this time at a neutral site. This was their first match against Centenary however and it was close till the end.

Game One vs Dallas

LeTourneau was able to strike revenge against Dallas (25-15, 25-13, 26-24) in their first sweep since September on Saturday afternoon. 

LeTourneau was able to jump to a quick 15-8 lead after a nice serving run by Ty Shannon in the first set and was in the driver's seat for the entire set.

In the second set, the YellowJackets were able to again take control early hopping up to a 14-6 lead over Dallas. The Jackets were able to secure the set on a kill from Hannah Payan.

Dallas was not ready to give up after two sets as they fought hard in the third. There were 11 times when the score was tied in the back-and-forth third set. However, the YellowJackets were able to finish off the third set with a final score of 26-24 on an ace.

Morgan Nix was able to keep up with her defensive efforts recording 8 digs per set. Reina Lawson put up 23 assists alongside Natalie Davenport who was able to record double-digit assists as well at ten.

Alexis Bowen Johnson had a nice outing with 11 kills and a hitting average of .786. Hannah Payan was able to put down 11 kills. Kaci Monk had a solid average of .462 percent.

The YellowJackets averaged a .337 attack percentage against Dallas and recorded a total of seven blocks for the sweep.

Game Two at Centenary

The second game of the day for LeTourneau was a closely fought battle but Centenary was able to close it out in the end and take a home win (21-25, 25-16, 25-15, 27-29, 8-15).

The first set was a back-and-forth until Centenary went on a five-point run to take a 16-8 lead. The YellowJackets did not give up as they were able to fight back to a 20-21 score. Centenary was able to take the first set with a score of 21-25.

The second set started similarly, a close back-and-forth one. LeTourneau then was able to chip away and gain a four-point lead at 17-13 forcing a Centenary timeout. Out of the timeout, the Jackets only gave up three points for the rest of the set with a final score of 25-16 for the second set of the match.

Now that the score was set even at one set apiece both teams were looking for the upper hand. LeTourneau took full advantage of the momentum carried from the second set to start with a 12-3 lead over The Ladies. At this point, the Jackets were able to cruise forward to a 25-15 set win.

Set four LeTourneau struck first taking a 6-1 lead. Centenary did not back down as they were able to get themselves within one still trailing 10-9 with plenty of volleyball to be played. The YellowJackets trucked on ahead advancing their lead to seven points at a score of 20-13 over Centenary. The Ladies took this opportunity to go on a seven-point run to tie up the set and make for an exciting finish. Centenary was able to gain the advantage when it counted ending the fourth set 27-29 to force a fifth set.

The fifth set proved to be a battle early on with Centenary able to take a 5-6 lead over the YellowJackets. Centenary was able to go on a five-point run to make the score 5-11 over the Jackets. LeTourneau tried to regroup, but they were not able to complete the comeback as The Ladies took set five 8-15 to finish out the Saturday in Shreveport.

Meghan Womack was able to record 15 kills and three block assists contributing to 16.5 points for LeTourneau. Hannah Payan with another double-digit kill match recording 15 while being one dig away from a double-double with nine digs.

Both setters, Natalie Davenport and Reina Lawson were able to record double-doubles with 25 assists and 14 digs for Davenport and 21 assists and 12 digs for Lawson.

Continuing on the defensive side for the YellowJackets, Allison Smith recorded a solo block and five block assists. Morgan Nix was able to record 24 digs in her second straight match. 

Centenary's Mariah Martinez had 31 assists with 12 digs for a double-double. Meadow Smith also recorded a double-double with 26 assists and 12 digs. The Ladies' top attackers were Jaylin St. Martin who put up 16 kills and Jaeda Moreno who hit at .444 percent for the match.

UP NEXT

LeTourneau will comeback home to face rival East Texas Baptist Tuesday at 6 PM, the YellowJackets took the first match earlier this season in a five-set emotional game.
