No. 5 Trinity Pulls Away from Women's Hoops

SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- Playing its second top-10 ranked opponent this season, the LeTourneau women's basketball team hung around with No. 5 Trinity before the host Tigers pulled away in the second half for a 93-55 victory over the YellowJackets on Sunday evening.

LeTourneau (3-3) also faced No. 6-ranked Christopher Newport just over two weeks ago.

The YellowJackets played right with the top-five Tigers over the first two quarters. LeTourneau trailed by seven early in the first period, but outscored Trinity 12-7 over the final five minutes of the period to get within 24-22 heading into the second. A Ty Moon 3-pointer followed by baskets from Johnai Wimbleduff, Ajanae Thomas, and Lauren Smith capped the stretch to keep the YellowJackets in range.

Defense picked up for LeTourneau in the second quarter as the YellowJackets held the high-powered Trinity offense to just 14 points and limited the Tigers to one made field goal over the final six-plus minutes of the period. A Bailey Broughton layup late in the period trimmed the LeTourneau deficit to 34-31 before Trinity took a 38-31 lead into the break. Trinity (7-0) picked it up over the final two quarters and pulled away. from LeTourneau. The Tigers scored 55 points in the second half.

Wimbleduff once again led the YellowJackets with her 17 points to go along with seven rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Thomas added 10 points, while Broughton had seven points with seven assists and four rebounds. Moon tallied 11 points and six rebounds off the bench.

LeTourneau shot 41.7 percent (20-of-47) from the field with five 3-pointers.

Trinity received 20 points apiece from Maggie Robbins and Claire Hale. All 15 Tigers that saw the floor scored in the contest. Trinity connected on 38.3 percent (31-of-81) for the game with eight 3-pointers and 23-for-28 at the foul line.
