No. 25 UTD claims series opener

Cortes records multi-hit game

LONGVIEW, Texas – No. 25 UT Dallas earned a 3-2 victory over LETU in the American Southwest Conference opener for both sides at Conrad-Vernon Field Friday.

The YellowJackets drop to 1-3 overall, while the defending conference champions moved to 1-0.

Sophomore Dylan Cortes recorded two of LETU's five hits, upping his average to .429. He's tied for the team league with junior Kyle Maysonave, who went 1 for 3 with an RBI. Dane Jones and Hunter Miller registered a knock each.

Senior Jared Schurig tossed five-scoreless innings despite working around a lot of traffic on the base paths. He scattered nine hits, walked one and fanned five of the 25 batters he faced.

Tyler Roberts worked the sixth, allowing two runs – both unearned – surrendering a single, issuing a free pass and fanning one. Cade Smitherman relieved Roberts, giving up one unearned tally on two hits and fanning two over the final three frames.

Brayshon Savage scored Marcos Villegas on a sacrifice fly to right, breaking a 2-2 tie in the top of the eighth for the eventual game winner.

Maysonave opened the scoring when he laced a single into left, scoring Jones in the home half of the second.

A lead-off walk, a throwing error and a sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth vaulted UT Dallas to a short-lived 2-1 advantage.

Miller banged a triple off the first-base bag and down the right-field line, plating Maysonave for the equalizer in the bottom of the inning.

The two teams conclude the three-game series with a doubleheader Saturday, beginning at noon.
