MARSHALL, Texas – Keauna Whitfield finished with 12 points, eight rebounds, five steals and two assists in LETU's hard-fought loss to UT Dallas in the first round of the 2022 American Southwest Conference Women's Basketball Championship Thursday.
Second on the program's all-time scoring list, Whitfield completed her time in Longview, Texas, with 1,709 points in 115 games. The Rosebud, Texas, native started every game in her career – the most in league history – fell five field-goal attempts shy of owning the conference mark.
With the 59-52 setback at Ornelas Gymnasium, the fifth-seeded YellowJackets conclude the season at 13-9. It's their third winning season in succession and fifth at
.500 or better in the last seven.
The Comets, seeded fourth, advanced to the semi-finals with a mark of 14-7.
Ajanae Thomas led all scorers, tallying 17 points and adding four boards and two steals.
Malacia Guy nettded eight points, while
Allaira Jones chipped in six.
The Comets depth played the deciding factor in the outcome, holding a 25-4 advantage in bench points.
LETU jumped out early and held a 15-9 margin with two minutes remaining in the opening period. UT Dallas utilized a 15-4 spurt and pulled ahead run 25-19 midway through the opening half.
Seperated by four after 20 minutes of play, the teams remained close in the third, with the Comets upping their margin to 46-40. UT Dallas' pulled away in the final frame, building its largest gap of the tilt at 54-42, with 6:15 remaining and holding on for the triumph.
