KERRVILLE, Texas – Jared Schurig dominated the Scheriner hitters in the nightcap, earning a doubleheader split at Bob Henry Field Saturday.
The YellowJackets improved to 6-12 on the season, while the Mountaineers fell to 7-6.
Schurig allowed two runs and tossed 8.0 innings – the longest outing of his career – and the offense provided plenty of run support to run his mark to 2-2 on the season. He scattered five hits, issued one walk and fanned eight.
After a two-out hit pushed Schreiner to a 1-0 lead in the opening frame, Schurig retired 13 of 14 batters, including 10 in succession. The Mountaineers scratched across their second run with a pair of hits and a groundout in the eighth.
Carter Amara doubled home
Weston McKinley, knotting the game at 1-all in the fifth, before scoring on a single by
Ethan Wood, giving LETU the lead. A miscue by the home team allowed
Cameron Pfafman to extend the gap in the next frame.
Amara,
Anthony Ybarra and
Cameron Pfafman walked in the seventh, the last two with two-outs. The YellowJackets capitalized and busted the game open with a wild pitch, scoring Amara and a three-run blast from
Dane Jones.
Landry Suarez registered the final three outs in relief of Schruig, allowing one run on three hits, while fanning one in the final frame.
The two sides wrap-up the series at 1 p.m. Sunday.
