LETU Defeats HPU in Final Game

BROWNWOOD, Texas – LETU softball takes down Howard Payne in the series finale Saturday afternoon, 4-2.

LeTourneau downed HPU in the series, 2-1. LETU advances to 8-15 overall and 5-10 in American Southwest Conference play. Howard Payne falls to 4-19, 1-14 ASC.

LETU totaled seven hits with only one error, while HPU had six hits with three errors.

The YellowJackets of LETU got the bats going early, tacking on two runs to open the game. Madelyn Tannery took responsibility for the first score when she smacked a triple to right center to send Kiley Banks across home plate. Callie Poore collected an RBI with a sacrifice fly to left field, advancing Tannery in for a run.

Howard Payne would go on to tally one run in the bottom half of the first to shrink the LETU lead. LeTourneau canceled that run in the top half of the second to extend its lead back to two. Banks singled through the right side to bring Hunter Handley dashing in for a score.

HPU tried to make a push in the bottom of the fourth, tallying one run after blanking LeTourneau in the top half of the inning but LETU's Alysa Torres thought otherwise. Torres hammered one over the left center wall for a single run homer in the top of the fifth to grant LeTourneau a two run lead, 4-2. This is Torres' third homerun on the season.

The defense of LETU would stand tall in the final moments as it held Howard Payne scoreless for the remainder of the contest to notch the victory.

Hailee Leger carried the load in the circle for LETU, capturing the win. Leger pitched all seven innings allowing only six hits on 26 batters faced. Tannery led LeTourneau with two hits, while Preslie Turney and Handley each had a hit in the contest.

The LETU YellowJackets will continue ASC play on the road as it heads to Austin, Texas Friday to take on Concordia at 4 p.m.
