Jackets Split at CTX

AUSTIN – LETU softball split a doubleheader with the Concordia Saturday in an American Southwest Conference matchup. The Jackets (9-16, 6-11 ASC) fell in the opener, 3-0, before edging the Tornados (11-13, 8-9 ASC) in the final game, 7-6.

In game one, LETU kept Concordia in check for six of seven innings before CTX tallied a three run inning in the bottom of the fourth. The Tornados outhit the YellowJackets 6-2 in the first contest. Each team totaled five runners left on base.

Madelyn Tannery led LETU in game one with both of the two hits. Bailey Richey went the distance in the circle, pitching all six innings with two strikeouts, taking the loss.

The YellowJackets struck early in game two of the doubleheader when Tannery kept a scorching bat, homering down the left line for a two run RBI to open the game. After playing stingy defense in the bottom half with three straight outs, LETU led 2-0 heading in the second inning.

CTX buckled down on defense in the next two innings, blanking LeTourneau in the top half of each, while tallying three runs to take the lead, 3-2.

At the top of the fourth, LETU knotted things at three after Tannery flied out to right field to send Preslie Turney dashing home for a score, collecting another RBI on the day. The Tornados would cancel out the Jacket run in the bottom half of the inning with one run of its own to hold a one run lead moving into the top of the fifth.

In the fifth inning it was all YellowJackets, stinging CTX for four runs in the top half.

Lexi Hutchins kicked the run frenzy off when she doubled to right center, advancing Alysa Torres in for a run. Macy Clevenger joined the mix, popping a single through the middle of the Concordia defense for an RBI. Isabella Tresca tallied a hit as she singled through the right side, allowing Turney to score. Tannery capped things off after another sacrifice RBI to right field, advancing Clevenger in for fourth run.

LETU led 7-4 moving into the bottom of the fifth. Concordia totaled two runs in the low end of the fifth to shrink the YellowJacket lead to one, 7-6.

After holding the Tornados scoreless in the sixth, the Jackets iced the final game in the bottom of the seventh with three consecutive outs.

LETU totaled eight hits in game two with eight different YellowJackets tallying at least one hit. Tannery led the Jackets at the plate with four RBIs, tying her career-high. Laney Taylor got the win in the circle for the LeTourneau, while Jade Merrell marked the save.

The YellowJackets return to Austin Saturday for the final game of the series at 12 p.m.
