Senior Day rally falls short

LONGVIEW, Texas – After rallying back from an early deficit, LETU suffered a setback in the series finale against UMHB with a three-run homer in the top of the ninth at Conrad Vernon Field Friday.

With the doubleheader split on senior day, the YellowJackets dropped to 13-21 overall, including 10-17 in American Southwest Conference play. The Crusaders improved to 18-15,12-12.

Wearing the YellowJackets uniform for their last time at home, Jared Schurig, Raul Martinez Kiernan Richards and Weston McKinley were recognized and honored for their contributions to the program in a ceremony between games.

If the night cap is any indication of future, the four seniors leave the program in good shape. LETU banged out 11 hits, including seven from freshmen or sophomores.

Cole Thompson and Hunter Miller paced the YellowJackets, recording three knocks each. Andrew Klingenstein and Ethan Wood totaled two apiece and Jaggar Vaughn tallied one.
UMHB jumped out to an early lead, hanging a four spot in the top of the first.

Thompson and Wood sliced the deficit with RBI singles in the second, plating Vaughn and Klingerstein, respectively.

Wood's second run scoring single came with two outs in the sixth, driving in Klingerstein and answering the Crusaders solo tally in the top of the frame.

After allowing a marker in the opponent's half of the seventh, Vaughn and Miller crossed the plate on base knocks from Klingenstein and Thompson. Klingenstein scampered home and knotted the game at 6-6, with a productive out from Devin Greaff.

With two outs, Malek Bolin drove the first pitch he saw over the wall in center, pushing the Crusaders in front 9-6.

The YellowJackets wrap up the regular season with a three-game series at Ozarks in Clarksville, Arkansas, April 29-30.
