Schurig shines in 4-2 win over Concordia

LONGVIEW, TexasJared Schurig spun 8.0 innings and the offense provided enough run support as LETU secured a 4-2 win over Concordia Texas in the series opener Friday at Conrad-Vernon Field.

The YellowJackets extended their winning streak to three, improving to 9-17 overall, including 6-13 in American Southwest Conference play, while the Tornados fell to 10-12, 9-7.

LETU built its advantage with a pair of runs in the third and extended it to 4-0 with two in the seventh. Schurig pounded the strike zone all night, working every quadrant of the zone and keeping the Tornados off balance. They finally scratched across a pair to tallies in the eight, cutting the deficit in half. Raul Martinez tossed a scoreless ninth to secure the victory and collect his first save of his career.

Noah Pendergrass started on the mound for CTX and was saddled with the loss, allowing two runs on one hit, walking three and striking out two. Colton Hunter worked the final five innings, surrendering two runs, issuing a base knock, four free passes and fanning five.

Aided by a defensive miscue, Jaggar Vaughn put LETU on the board by lacing a two-out single to right, plating Anthony Ybarra and Ethan Wood. The pair worked base-on-balls and moved into scoring position when a throwing error on a grounder by Cameron Pfafman loaded the bases.

In the seventh, Devin Greaff and Wood walked with one out. After a fly out, Greaff scored when Dane Jones smoked a single between the defender and the third base bag. Wood advanced to third on the play. On a delayed steal by Jones, Wood scampered home to push the margin out to 4-0.

A pair of free passes and two RBI singles in the eighth cut the advantage in half.

The two teams conclude the series at with a doubleheader Saturday, with first pitch set for 1 p.m.
