CLARKSVILLE, Ark. –
Weston McKinley blasted a grand slam and
Raul Martinez tossed five scoreless innings, fueling LETU to a critical victory over Ozarks at Lonnie Qualls Field Friday.
The YellowJackets kept their postseason hopes alive, improving to 14-22 overall, including 11-18 in league play, with a 12-6 triumph. The Eagles dropped to 13-24, 12-17.
McKinley went 1 for 4, with a walk and five RBIs, while Martinez came out of the bullpen to start the fourth and scattered three hits, walked four and struck out three.
Shane Salzman retired the home side in order in the ninth, setting up a win or go home in Saturday's season finale.
LETU clinches the eighth and final seed in next week's ASC Championship with a win and a Sul Ross State loss at Hardin-Simmons. The YellowJackets are eliminated with a loss, while the Eagles sew up the final spot with a victory.
Trailing 3-2 in the top of the third, LETU hung a six spot, with McKinley delivering the big blow when he deposited the first pitch he saw over the barrier in left center.
Dane Jones evened the game at 3-3, with an RBI single to center, plating
Ethan Wood, who led off the frame with a base-on-balls.
Cameron Pfafman laced a base knock to right and moved to third on Jones' hit before scampering home on a wild pitch and giving his side the lead for good.
The YellowJackets opened with a pair of runs in their first at-bats but gave one back in the bottom half of the inning. A pair of unearned runs by Ozarks in the next stanza put the guest in a 3-2 hole. The Eagles responded from the top-half of the frame with three and knocked out
Jared Schurig after just three innings.
Pitching dominated the middle portion of the contest, with the teams combining for three hits and no runs until McKinley reached on a two-base error and scored on a wild pitch.
Cody Stanley and McKinley registered RBIs, plating
Hunter Miller and
Dylan Cortes in the tenth for the final margin.
