Maysonave homers in 3-2 win at ETBU

MARSHALL, TexasKyle Maysonave LETU to a 3-2 victory over ETBU in the series opener at Woods Field Friday.

The YellowJackets jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first and held on for the victory, moving to 11-18 on the season, including 8-14 in American Southwest Conference. Sitting atop the league standings, the Tigers dropped to 21-9, 18-4.

Locked in a pitcher's duel, Jared Schurig spun his sixth quality start of the season and evening his mark at 4-4, while Godkin suffered the setback. Schurig allowed two runs – one earned – on seven hits and striking out 10 in seven innings of work. Godkin went the distance, surrendering three runs – two earned – five hits, four bases-on-balls and fanning a dozen.
Ethan Wood opened the game with a leadoff walk and gave LETU the early lead when he scored on a passed ball. Maysonave doubled the advantage with a two-out knock, plating Dane Jones, who reached on an infield single.

A blast over the wall in left in the sixth from Maysonave extended the margin to 3-0.

Aided by a miscue in the home seventh, ETBU managed to finally scratch out some offense against Schurig. With one out, a two-base error, a double and a single trimmed the deficit to one. Schurig escaped any further damage by inducing a fly out and a ground out.

Landry Suarez picked up a hold after tossing a scoreless eighth, punching out three. Raul Martinez made things interesting, walking a pair in the ninth but recorded the final three outs – two by strike out – to earn his second career save in as many weeks.

Maysonave and Dane Jones registered two knocks each, while Devin Greaff tallied the last for the YellowJackets.

The two teams conclude the series at with a doubleheader Saturday, with first pitch set for 1 p.m.
