LONGVIEW, Texas – LETU softball dropped the final game of its American Southwest Conference three-game series against No. 5 Belhaven Saturday, falling 4-0.
The YellowJackets (11-18, 8-13 ASC) managed two hits off Blazers (25-5, 17-4 ASC) ace Kennedy Carruth, but couldn't scratch out a run on the day.
LETU held Belhaven in check for the first two innings, leaving the No. 5 ranked team in the country scoreless. BU got on the board after tallying two runs in the top of the third inning. The Blazers scored its last two runs in the fifth inning after capitalizing on a couple LETU defensive errors, taking a 4-0 lead heading into the bottom of the inning.
The Jackets had a moment of opportunity in the bottom half of the fifth with bases loaded and one out, but Carruth put a damper on it, striking out back-to-back batters to close the inning. Despite blanking the Belhaven in the final two innings, LETU couldn't bounce back with runs, ultimately falling.
The Blazers outhit the YellowJackets 5-2. LETU left six on base, while Belhaven stranded five.
Preslie Turney and
Alysa Torres accounted for the YellowJackets' pair of hits.
Hailee Leger took the loss in the circle for LETU, tallying three strikeouts for 4.2 innings worked.
Jade Merrell also seen action in the circle, pitching 2.1 innings.
The Jackets head on the road as it continues ASC play Thursday at 6 p.m. against Mary Hardin-Baylor for a three-game series.
