Box Score BELTON, Texas – LETU softball fell in the first game of its series Thursday at No. 25 Mary Hardin-Baylor, 9-3.
The YellowJackets struck first in the contest, totaling two runs in the opening inning.
Madelyn Tannery was responsible for the first run after she doubled for an RBI, sending
Kiley Banks home.
Alysa Torres accounted for the second run when she collected an RBI after a sacrifice fly out to right field, moving Tannery across home plate for a score.
Jackets led 2-0 moving into the bottom half of the first inning. The Crusaders didn't wait long to spark a comeback, tallying two runs of its own in the bottom of the first, knotting the game at two.
LETU found itself back in the driver's seat quickly, snatching the lead back from UMHB in the top of the second when Banks singled to right field to advance
Preslie Turney in for a run. The YellowJackets blanked the Crusaders in the bottom of the inning, taking a 3-2 lead into the top of the third.
The No. 25 ranked team in the country found its momentum in the third inning, holding LETU scoreless in the top and racking up five runs in bottom to take a 7-2 lead. The YellowJackets couldn't recover as the Crusaders tacked on two insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth, ultimately putting the contest away.
LETU totaled eight hits on the day, while UMHB had 14.
Banks led the Jackets at the plate with one RBI and three hits, tying her career-high. Turney added two hits to the LETU hitting total, while
Emilee Anderson had one.
Bailey Richey took the loss in the circle, pitching 2.1 innings with three strikeouts.
The YellowJackets return to UMHB Friday to finish its three-game series with a doubleheader, beginning at noon.
