LONGVIEW, Texas -- The LeTourneau volleyball team rallied back from a two-set deficit to stun visiting Sul Ross State in five sets 22-25, 14-25, 25-20, 25-18, 15-13 in ASC action on Friday night inside Solheim Arena.
It was the second straight five-set match for LeTourneau (7-4, 3-2 ASC) this week. The YellowJackets are 3-2 in five-set matches this year.
Sul Ross (5-5, 2-3 ASC) was strong early on to pick up set wins in each of the first two games. But LeTourneau would not go away quietly.
The YellowJackets strung together five consecutive points to notch a third-set win, 25-20, and extend the match.
Hannah Payan had two of her 19 kills during the final stretch.
In the fourth, LeTourneau trailed 15-11 but used a 14-3 scoring run to run away with the set win.
Kaci Monk started the run with a kill, while
Allison Smith added two kills to give the YellowJackets a 16-15 lead. After Sul Ross got a point back, LeTourneau scored four straight which included two kills from
Avery Mabery Morgan.
Smith added a kill and an ace on back-to-back rallies to complete the comeback and give the YellowJackets a 25-18 win.
The evenly-played match continued into the fifth set as the teams traded leads and ties. Payan came up big late as her kill gave LeTourneau a 14-13 lead and an Sul Ross error on the following point capped the comeback win for the YellowJackets.
Payan recorded her fifth double-double of the year with 19 kills and a career-high 22 digs. Morgan came on strong over the final three sets to record 13 kills and Monk added 10 kills. Smith totaled six blocks to go with nine kills and
Alexis Bowen Johnson had four total blocks. Along the back row,
Morgan Nix had 12 digs, while
Natalie Davenport (24 assists, 11 digs) and
Reina Lawson (22 assists, 10 digs).
Sul Ross was led by Annika Canaba's 20 kills, 20 assists, 10 digs, and five blocks.Â
