ALPINE, Texas -- The LeTourneau men's soccer team closed the season on Saturday with a 2-1 win at Sul Ross State in non-conference action thanks to a pair of goals from
Syed Zain and
Zach Aitken.
LeTourneau ends the year with a 6-5-5 overall record. Saturday's match was a non-conference contest as Sul Ross State (1-10-5) is transitioning to Division II.Â
Saturday's scores came from two sources that had yet to put one in the back of the net this season. Zain notched his first goal of the year as he put the YellowJackets ahead 1-0 in the 15th minute, assisted by
Caleb Bransford.
After Sul Ross had tied the score early in the second half, LeTourneau had the answer. In the 80th minute, Aitken took a penalty kick that was saved by Sul Ross keeper Jose Rangel but the ball deflected right back to Aitken who scored from short range to give the lead back to the YellowJackets.
The goal was the first of the senior's career.
The LeTourneau defense held strong over the final minutes as the host Lobos got four shots off, but
Ethan Aiken made a save on the final chance in the 90th minute to preserve the win.
Aiken made one save as he played the entire second half.
Kolton Johnson made six saves in a shutout of the first 45 minutes.
Seven of LeTourneau's 10 shots were on target in the match, led by two from Bransford.
Andrew Magana had the goal for Sul Ross in the 51st minute to even the match. Rangel made five saves in the loss.
LeTourneau ends the year with a winning record for the third time in the last four years and the fourth straight year with a record of at least .500.
