COMMERCE, Texas -- The LeTourneau women's basketball team opened the 2023-24 campaign with a 96-41 exhibition loss at Division I foe Texas A&M-Commerce on Monday night at The Field House.
The game was an exhibition for LeTourneau as the YellowJackets open the regular season on Wednesday at Texas Lutheran. It was the season opener for A&M-Commerce (1-0), a member of the Southland Conference.
Bailey Broughton led the YellowJackets with 10 points and three assists, while
Haylee Jordan tallied five blocks with six points and five rebounds.
Ganae Gaines added nine points.
LeTourneau was within 19-11 at the end of the first quarter and sliced into that margin early in the second on a bucket from
Mariana Espinosa that made it 19-13. A
LaTerra Satcher basket moments later again made it a six-point deficit (21-15), but A&M-Commerce turned up the pressure and finished the period on a 24-2 run to take a commanding 45-17 lead at the half.
The YellowJackets scored 18 points in the third period and shot 43.8 percent from the field, but the host Lions added to the lead.
It was the fifth all-time meeting between the programs, but the first time it was an exhibition for one of the teams.
Jordyn Newsome had a game-high 24 points to lead A&M-Commerce.
