Volleyball Season Concludes in ASC Tournament

BELTON, Texas -- The LeTourneau volleyball team saw its season come to a close with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-23, 25-20) loss to No. 5 seed Hardin-Simmons in the quarterfinal round of the ASC Tournament on Thursday in Belton.

LeTourneau ends the year 13-14 overall and finished fourth in the ASC during the regular season. Hardin-Simmons (13-14) advances to play No. 1 seed Mary Hardin-Baylor on Friday at 5 p.m. in the semifinals.

Hardin-Simmons led throughout the first set as the Cowgirls jumped out to a 6-0 lead. LeTourneau had a 6-1 run late in the set that got the YellowJackets within 20-17 after an ace from Reina Lawson, but Hardin-Simmons would not let it get any closer than that and claimed the final three points for a 25-19 set one win.

Back-to-back kills from Yari Ortiz got the YellowJackets jump-started in the second set as LeTourneau held a 7-2 lead early on. LeTourneau had a 17-15 lead later in the frame as Ortiz and Allison Smith had consecutive kills before an assisted block from Smith and Kaci Monk gave the YellowJackets a two-point edge.

The lead stretched to three (20-17) on a Hannah Payan ace, but the Cowgirls responded with four straight points to grab a 21-20 lead. LeTourneau scored two straight to even the score at 23 apiece, but a kill from Hardin-Simmons' Jadyn Hernandez followed by an ace gave the set to the Cowgirls.

Hardin-Simmons finished off the sweep in the third as it built a 15-8 lead and LeTourneau could not overcome the deficit.

Ortiz had 12 kills, two blocks, and eight digs in the loss for LeTourneau. Lawson notched a double-double with 23 assists and 11 digs to go with three kills and two aces.

Morgan Nix totaled 19 digs to finish the season with a program-record 757 digs (7.21 per set). Smith added three blocks to her career program record total of 343.

Liz Underwood had 15 kills to lead Hardin-Simmons.
