Strong Start, but Women's Hoops Falls at ETBU

MARSHALL, Texas -- The LeTourneau women's basketball team got off to a fast start in the first quarter, but host East Texas Baptist overcame the YellowJackets and took a 61-47 victory on Saturday afternoon inside Ornelas Gymnasium.

LeTourneau (6-15, 2-12 ASC) shot 58 percent in the first quarter and took a 20-12 lead into the second.

AJ Thomas had eight of her 10 points in the period and hit two 3-pointers at the end of the shot clock to preserve the early lead for the YellowJackets. The YellowJackets hit 4-of-5 from beyond the arc in the first quarter and the eight-point lead was its largest lead of the game. ETBU (16-5, 10-4 ASC) answered in the second quarter and outscored LeTourneau 21-6 to grab a 33-26 lead at halftime.

LeTourneau didn't go away quietly, though. The YellowJackets used an 11-3 run over the first six-plus minutes of the third to regain a 37-36 lead after two free throws from Ty Moon. Down by five entering the fourth, LeTourneau trimmed the deficit to three on two occasions, including after a Moon conventional three-point play with 4:20 remaining.

ETBU had the final say once again as the host Tigers ended the game on a 12-1 run to secure the win and the season sweep.

Moon led the YellowJackets with 14 points, while Thomas had 10 points. Kyndall Hardeman added seven points and 10 rebounds. Bailey Broughton chipped in six points and Kylie Weeks had four points with four rebounds. LeTourneau shot 33.3 percent (16-of-48) from the field and went 11-16 at the line.

ETBU was led by Jade Gynes' 16 points and six rebounds. The Tigers connected on 38.3 percent (18-of-47) and made 22-of-36 from the free-throw line.
