Softball Drops Series Opener to Concordia

LONGVIEW, Texas -- Hailee Leger provided another strong start, but the LeTourneau softball team could not muster enough offense in a 3-2 loss to Concordia Texas in the opener of a three-game ASC series on Friday night.

One game was played Friday after the series was altered due to wet field conditions. The two teams conclude the series on Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m.

Leger (3-3) allowed one earned run on six hits with a pair of strikeouts in her complete-game effort. It was her third complete-game of the season in five starts and the fifth time she's allowed one earned run or fewer in her six appearances.

LeTourneau took a 2-1 lead with two runs in the fourth inning. Alexa Neilon led off the frame with a single to shallow center field and Mickenzie Murry followed with a bunt single. A Concordia throwing error on the bunt allowed Neilon to advance to third. A wild pitch during the next at-bat enabled Neilon to scamper home and Murry scored later on a passed ball.

The lead was short-lived, though, as the visiting Tornados scored twice in the top of the fifth. An infield RBI single and an RBI ground out led to both runs as Concordia took the lead for good.

LeTourneau threatened in the sixth when Murry led off with a walk, her second of the game, and got to second with a steal. Concordia right fielder Megan Hooper made a terrific play on Cece Pace's fly ball down the line and was able to double-off Murry at second to end the rally.

The YellowJackets also got the tying runner in scoring position in the seventh after Kenna Hendry singled and stole second base before Concordia reliever Krista Burg shut the door to preserve the win for the guests.

Murry went 1-for-1 with two walks and a run scored, while Hendry and Neilon had the other two hits for LeTourneau.

Caitlyn Rangel (2-2) got the win for Concordia after tossing five innings and allowing two unearned runs on two hits. Burg received the save after going the final two innings.
