Softball Scores 20 in Series Opener, Splits at Howard Payne

BROWNWOOD, Texas -- The LeTourneau softball team put up a near record performance at the plate in game one of Friday's doubleheader at Howard Payne in a 20-9 victory before fall in game two, 2-1, in ASC action in Brownwood.

LeTourneau (12-7, 4-4 ASC) tied a program single-game record for runs score in the opener and set a record with 13 runs in one inning.

GAME ONE: LeTourneau 20, Howard Payne 9

LeTourneau scored a program-record 13 runs in the second inning and had 20 runs for the first time since 2001 in a 20-9 victory in game one.

The 20 runs tied a program record, but had not been achieved since April 13, 2001 in a 20-2 win over Wiley.

Kylie Grisham had three hits with a homer and two RBIs to lead the 16-hit attack for LeTourneau, while every starter had at least one run scored and 11 different players recorded at least one hit. Kenna Hendry, Laney Taylor, and Leighton Landreth all had two hits while Hendry and Murphy Williams had three RBIs each.

Down 2-0 entering the second inning, LeTourneau sent 18 batters to the plate and scored 13 runs on seven hits. Williams hit a three-run homer during the inning, her third of the year, while LeTourneau drew two bases loaded walks. Grisham had an RBI hit-by-pitch and run-scoring hits from Alexa Neilon, Laney Taylor, and Hendry capped the inning.

Grisham hit her second homer of the year in the fourth inning, a solo shot, to give LeTourneau a 14-3 lead.

LeTourneau tacked on six more runs in the sixth to finish off the win. Callie Poore had a two-run double and Lauren Wilking added a two-run single to highlight the inning.

Williams (6-1) went four innings in the circle and got the win after allowing two earned runs on six hits with three strikeouts.

Cason (1-3) got the loss for Howard Payne in the circle. Elaine Gonzalez went 3-for-4 with four RBIs at the plate for Howard Payne.

GAME TWO: Howard Payne 2, LeTourneau 1

LeTourneau nearly mounted a comeback, but fell in the second game 2-1.

The YellowJackets trailed 2-0 entering the sixth, but got on the board when Hendry singled home Grisham with two outs. LeTourneau had runners at first and second with two outs, but Howard Payne starter Bree Cason got out of the jam to keep the hosts in the lead.

Grisham and Hendry had two hits each in the loss as LeTourneau totaled five hits.

Howard Payne got a run in the first on a Makayla Wesley infield RBI single. In the fourth, Howard Payne added a run on a LeTourneau error to go ahead 2-0.

Hailee Leger (5-5) was sharp once again in the circle as she went six innings and allowed one earned run on six hits with four strikeouts.

Cason (2-4) got the win in her complete-game effort.
